Referring to the background of the Al Jazeera report, the European Union launches an investigation into violations of Cyprus and Malta regarding “golden passports”

On Tuesday, the European Commission will finalize and launch violations measures against Cyprus and Malta regarding the controversial “Golden Passport” plans. Vice President Marus Civkovic told reporters in Brussels that the plans used to grant investors European Union citizenship. “We will finalize the release of the measure for investor charts on Tuesday morning. That day (Monday) we discussed in particular the compliance of these plans with European Union law, in light of potential breach measures.
“It is important to know that the commission often raised serious concerns about the plans. He added that recent developments confirm these concerns. He also said that the European Commission would remain in close contact with both Cyprus and Malta on this issue. A recent secret investigation by Al-Jazeera revealed how senior Cypriot officials discussed methods of granting citizenship to a convicted criminal in violation of the provisions of the citizenship by investment system on the island. The plan ,which has been criticized for some time both at home and abroad, was suspended last week.
